About Microgynon
Microgynon is ideal for those who have not taken the pill before. If used correctly, this combined pill is one of the most effective contraceptives available. Microgynon works in several ways including:
- Preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation)
- Changing the consistency of the mucus lining in your cervix to make it hard for sperm to reach the egg
- Changing the lining of your uterus so the fertilized egg can’t implant itself
If you take Microgynon as instructed, it can protect you from unwanted pregnancy 99% of the time. However, this medication is not suitable for all women so it’s best to consult with your GP.
Microgynon will also not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases so we advise using additional contraceptive (i.e. condoms) if you have multiple partners.
How to Use Microgynon
Microgynon comes in a 21-day course. This means that you should take Microgynon every day for 21 days. This is followed by 7 pill-free days. We strongly advise that you take this pill at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, take a pill as soon as you remember. If necessary, take two pills at the same time. Then continue with your regular schedule. It’s important to use alternative contraception methods in the days following your missed dose. It’s important to take Microgynon as directed for it to work properly. Each blister is labelled with a day of the week to guide you through. Don’t break or chew the tablet. Swallow it whole. You may take it with water, if needed.
Your body may not have absorbed all the hormones if you are sick or have diarrhoea within 2 hours of taking the tablet. To compensate, take another dose from the extra strip in the box. Then, continue with your usual schedule.
You might need to use additional contraceptive methods for the next 7 days after you’ve recovered from persistent vomiting and diarrhoea (more than 24 hours).
Don’t self-diagnose. If you are unsure how to proceed, get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Microgynon can also cause some side effects. These, however, are rare and not all women suffer from them. Common side effects of this combined pill include:
- Weight gain
- Depressed mood
- Headache
- Stomach ache
- Nausea
Women who take contraceptive pills also have increased risks of breast cancer, liver problems, and blood clots. Check for other symptoms of these diseases when taking Microgynon. If you experience anything unusual, stop taking the tablet and contact your doctor right away.
